Northpower Wins EEA Engineering Excellence Award for Enabling Te Ao Māori Values to Guide Construction of a Resilient Power Supply for Whangārei

Edison Consulting Group congratulates Northpower and the wider project team for winning the EEA Engineering Excellence Award 2024. The award recognises the successful delivery of the Kensington-Maungatapere 110 kV Line Replacement - a critical infrastructure project for Whangārei.

This project faced unique challenges, including land subsidence, environmental constraints, and cultural sensitivities. Edison was proud to provide project delivery expertise, ensuring both the technical success and the integration of Te Ao Māori principles, in collaboration with Te Parawhau hapū.

Edison provided detailed project management expertise across the entire project lifecycle to deliver this time-critical project:

  • Stakeholder engagement and coordination
  • Option Assessment and Scoping
  • Procurement of major equipment and materials
  • Detailed design (delivered by Lumen)
  • Consenting (Whangārei District Council and Department of Conservation)
  • Construction

Our team members Colin Boggiss and Ben Blake played key roles in the project’s success as Project Manager and Project Management support, ensuring delivery of a solution that embraced Te Ao Māori, leveraged Edison’s high voltage expertise, coordinated multiple facets of the works through Edison’s broad organisation relationships, and effectively managed stakeholders that secured resilient electricity supply to Whangārei.

This achievement highlights the power of collaboration and the importance of working with diverse stakeholders to achieve shared goals for communities and the environment.
